Our advice: Avoid excessive carbon build-up: A thin layer of carbon (called the cake) forms naturally inside the bowl. It protects the briar, but if it becomes too thick (+1.5mm), gently scrape it off, using a tool designed for this purpose, i.e. a reamer, to avoid cracking the pipe.
